From Canaletto to Florence on the Elbe

"Canaletto-City" Pirna
Just a 15-minute drive from WALDGUT lies Pirna. The lovingly restored old town, with its historic facades, narrow alleys and baroque-style market square, captivates visitors with its special charm. It’s no surprise that the famous Venetian painter Bernardo Bellotto, known as “Canaletto,” immortalised the town in several of his paintings in the mid-18th century.
To this day, you can stroll along the Canaletto Trail through Pirna and discover the perspectives seen in his iconic cityscapes. But the town offers more than just history: numerous small cafés, boutiques, galleries and events invite you to linger and explore.

Pillnitz Palace
A boat trip on the Elbe aboard a historic paddle steamer is an experience in itself. But when the magnificent Pillnitz Palace appears on the riverbank halfway between Pirna and Dresden, the journey becomes a true step back in time.
This baroque palace ensemble, with its impressive gardens, combines Chinese architectural influences with European Rococo. It delights visitors with intricate details, ornate pavilions and sweeping views of the Elbe River.
Surrounded by expansive parklands, Pillnitz Palace invites you to stroll and marvel. Whether in the Pleasure Garden, the English Garden or the famous Camellia House, nature and culture lovers alike will find peace, beauty and inspiration here.

Dresden
The Saxon capital Dresden impresses with its unique blend of architecture, art, culture and vibrant urban life.
Often described as a “symphony in stone,” Dresden tells of a glorious past through landmarks like the Frauenkirche, the Royal Palace, the Semper Opera House, and the Zwinger Palace. Yet the city is far more than its history, it is also a place of creativity and openness, full of youthful energy and modern spirit.
Whether strolling through the historic old town, exploring the lively Neustadt districts, or enjoying a boat trip on the Elbe, Dresden is full of variety, inspiration, and always worth a visit.

Castles & Palaces
Rich in history and set amidst picturesque landscapes, the many castles and fortresses around Dresden offer impressive destinations for day trips.
Just a few minutes from WALDGUT, the Königstein Fortress rises majestically above the Elbe Valley. As one of the largest hilltop fortresses in Europe, it captivates visitors with breathtaking views and fascinating glimpses into the past.
A little more hidden, but equally charming, is Weesenstein Castle, known for its unusual architecture and tranquil location in the Müglitz Valley.
Whether grand, romantic, or full of mystery, the castles and fortresses of the region are well worth a visit at any time of year.
